I want to introduce my friend John Piper pretty briefly, but one of the advantages of something like the Gospel Coalition,

and it's rather different than many other conferences,

is that you get exposed to many different ways of expounding the scripture.

Very, very different preachers can expound the scripture in powerful

ways, in very effective ways, and yet do it in ways that are so different from each other. And that's extremely important for those of us who want to learn.

When I was trying to learn to be a preacher, I discovered that not that the most

important single way to learn to be a good preacher was be exposed to

good preaching but a variety.

If you are only exposed to one kind of person, one kind of preacher, you only have one preaching hero, you become a clone,

if you have two preaching heroes, you become schizophrenic.

And when you get a number of them, very often they pass into you, almost like rings on a tree and you become more and more

who God is calling you to be.

I don't know anyone who's trying to learn to be a preacher today that shouldn't have at

least one John Piper ring in their life.

Because John, I remember years ago when I first sat down with, some of you don't know it was a cassette

tapes, you look it up on Wikipedia.

A series of tapes of his Hebrews, his series on Ruth and that sort of thing.

It was remarkable and I said, wait a minute, this is completely

different than this guy, this guy, this guy, and this is great. He's been a very, very important

model for all of us, many of us.
