and how they got their start.

Charles Tays Russell was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1852. Throughout his life, Russell was raised as a Presbyterian and Congregationalist, but by the time he turned 20 years old, he left both religions.

He was skeptical of Christian religious views on Hell and his skepticism only increased when he met William Miller, a follower of the Adventist movement who introduced him to new beliefs.

With the help of William Miller and other members, Russell studied the Bible and wrote his first two Bible journals in 1877.

By 1879, Russell published his Bible journal entitled The Watchtower.
