There was little to boast about as far as his familial pedigree was concerned.

He descended from a long line of violent criminals and sex offenders.

This was true in both sides of the family tree. His father was a murderer who died by execution in 1955.

His mother had been a prostitute in the 1950s.

Gerald's criminal career started early.

Beginning at age six, he ran away, committed sex offenses, and committed burglary. At the age of 12 he was placed on

probation for burglary. Later that year he was charged with committing

lewd and lascivious acts with a

juvenile hall. He was paroled in July 1961, but he was arrested in less than a year along with his half

brother David Hunt. They were charged with armed robbery and were sent to another juvenile

correctional facility.

Gerald escaped, but later turned himself in.

He was paroled in 1963.

He wasn't much of a scholar.

He was suspended from Sacramento High School in December 1963.

His behavior was in violation of the school's rules.

It didn't help that he received five F's. At the time, his probation officer
