Good morning. It's Sunday, July 6th. I'm Ali Valshi. We are expecting a news conference to begin any minute now in central Texas where rescue and recovery operations continue after Friday's catastrophic flash flooding along the Guadalupe River. State and local officials say the death toll now stands at 53 across five counties.

They say they don't have an exact count of the total number of people still missing,

but we do know that 27 people, mostly young girls,

remain missing after floodwaters tore through their summer camp.

Kerr County was hit especially hard.

28 adults and 15 children confirmed dead so far.

Again, that we believe is separate from the 27 people at the camp who are still unaccounted

for.

According to the National Weather Service, between 4 and 10 inches of additional rainfall are expected

in some areas today, threatening to unleash even more flash flooding and

worse conditions. Roughly 6 million people are under flood watches throughout the region.

Earlier this morning, Texas's lieutenant governor, Dan Patrick, spoke with NBC News. He gave us an

update on the rescue efforts. We began the search and rescue immediately, and I believe the last number

is over 800 were rescued from the floodwaters, many of them by air. And we thank from the White

House down to our National Guard, to our state police, all the way down. Everybody was in.

We had drones in the air looking for people. But it is my hope that miracle still happened.

This is a remarkable story in which about 10 inches of rain fell over a course of a few hours.

But that 10 inches of rainfall within less than an hour

caused a 25-foot surge in the Guadalupe River. That's how flash floods work, so you have to

take these seriously. As I mentioned, we are awaiting an update from officials in Kerr County.

That's the county that's hardest hit by the flooding.
