Summary

With Marion McKeone away this week we bring you an extra special bonus comedy Selection Box to start your weekend off with a laugh. You’ll probably know John Hastings from his barnstorming performance on America’s Got Talent but the life he lived prior to that big moment is even more extraordinary and hilarious.  John sits down with Jarlath on the eve of his first album release to talk about the rare infant dyspraxia he was born with that led him to be mercilessly bullied in school. Known for his intensely funny and personal shows John pulls no punches in explaining the strange and rocky road of the tour comedian in Canada and how it feels very similar to Ireland at times.  As live entertainment returns across the world John talks about the turning point moment he had while performing down a camera for Jarlath’s Return Of Craic online lockdown show, the divorce, the bicycle accident that nearly cost him his arm, Patton Oswalt’s influence and some sage advice for new comics - there really is something for everyone in this week’s Comedy Selection Box from Irishman Abroad. Marion will of course return next week.  To download John’s new album visit https://www.800poundgorillarecords.com/. To hear every episode in full and to gain access to the entire back-catalogue of over 500 Irishman Abroad episodes that are not available on iTunes for just the price of a pint every month visit www.patreon.com/irishmanabroad Supplementary research provided by John Meagher. The Irishman Abroad Liveline is now open. You can now get in touch with us and feature on our shows by sending your WhatsApp voice note to 0044 7543 122 330. Why not pose a running question to Irish Olympic Legend Sonia O'Sullivan or ask our America Correspondent Marion McKeone her thoughts on a current talking point Stateside? Of course, if you have an issue with traffic or elephants on the loose in your area, Jarlath can do his best to sort that out too. Our charity partner is jigsawonline.ie. What a show we have for you today with the incomparable John Hastings, a man who I've worked with so many times and had no idea if he had any Irish blood in him until I asked him,

0:21.7

he looked like the most Irish man ever to have lived.

0:24.9

I mean, it's utterly ridiculous.

0:27.4

And as soon as I, so here's the thing is, Andrew Maxwell and anyone who's been to Ireland just goes,

0:32.5

but they love to tell me is, you know, you look like a guard.

0:35.5

And I go, yeah, I've been to Ireland. I understand.

0:39.8

They look at me and I look at them. Like, it's like, like, they look at me like, why are you

0:43.9

doing out of uniform? And I look at them being like, why are you guys all dressed so sexy?

0:47.7

And to the point, by the way, that I relatively recently was on a internet Zoom date situation in the lockdown Zoom

0:57.8

date time. And an American who had been to Ireland for a week said, has anyone ever told

1:03.8

you you look like a guard? And I was like, yes, yes, they have. So yes, no, as it turns out,

1:09.3

my great-grandfather's name was Patrick Joseph

1:12.1

Coffey, my grandmother's maiden name was Coffee. So I am an eighth Irish, and I shouldn't have

1:19.0

been surprised, but I was utterly shocked. All this time, I thought I was Scotch in English, but I'm the

1:23.1

holy Trinity of that part of Europe, Scottish, English, Irish, baby.

1:39.0

I think it's when people from across the pond use fractions and decimals to describe the quantity of Irish they are.

1:46.7

That's when people go, ah, that's not really Irish, but that really is the only way to understand your heritage now.

1:47.7

Yeah, because here's the thing, as I say to them, my ancestors were adventurous and got a boot,

1:54.2

got on a boat that went further than Liverpool.

1:57.4

So I got news for you.
