Summary

The Rome Public Health Advocacy Manifesto represents a significant step forward in prioritizing public health on a global scale. Its focus on people, planet, evidence-based policy, partnerships, investment, and trust in science highlights the key areas that need urgent attention for a world in turmoil. 


In this episode, we discuss with those that helped develop the manifesto and very publicly signed it to find out what that they found new and important in it and what they personally committed to by putting their signature on the manifesto.

The pandemic has been a huge wake-up call to all of us on the importance of public health.

The lesson was strongly felt by political and business leaders, but also by the general public.

The health sector too now has a heightened understanding of the priority that public health measures and the preventative interventions must have.

At the same time, the pandemic provided clear examples of why evidence-based policy is so vital to protect all,

as well as how easily this can be undermined by bad faith actors promoting false narratives, fake news and conspiracy theories.

At the World Congress of Public Health, the first that followed the pandemic dismay in Rome,

Asfer, the Association of Schools of Public Health, and IFA, the European Public Health Alliance,

came together to distill the key actions needed to advance public health.

They were put together into a public health advocacy manifesto and presented to the Congress.

The Rome Public Health Advocacy manifesto firstly commits to putting people and the planet front and center. They must be the first public health consideration and focus of all interventions.

Secondly, strong quality evidence and science should be the foundation of public health interventions.

This obviously needs to be accompanied by high quality training of public health professionals to make the greatest impact over the shortest time.

Thirdly, active working partnerships must be nurtured such that all public health communities,

from experts and policymakers, training and education programs to civil society and the public,

collaborate as one, all in an action-oriented and proactive manner with specific and actionable

commitments. Fourthly, importantly, sufficient investment is critical to ensure that this collaboration

is impactful, robust and sustainable. The constituencies that need proactive support include national public health institutes,

public health training and education programs, civil society organizations,
