On this episode of Newt's World, I was recently intrigued by an article I read about a

series of earthquakes in the Ring of Fire, the Volcanically and

Seismically Bollocks section of Pacific, the Runes from New Zealand,

up through Indonesia and Japan, across the ocean to Alaska, and down the

west coast of the Americas to Chile. The Ring of Fire is really a ring out

subduction zones. Nearly all the earthquakes in the region

are caused by tectonic plates colliding with each other. The idea of the really big one,

a massive earthquake striking the west coast there in states could have a

catastrophic effect on the entire region. What are seismologists studying and how will

they determine when it's going to happen? I'm really pleased to welcome my guest,

Harold Tobin, Professor of Earth and Space Sciences at the University of Washington

and the Director of the Pacific Northwest seismic network.
