This is Sheila Irwin.

She's registered blind, but because of a tiny microchip placed under the centre of her retina

at the back of her eye, she can read again, as she told the BBC earlier this week.

I could have cried.

When I looked, because I haven't seen letters for so long,

and then I lit up the word, and it was overwhelming.

Sheila is 70, and began losing her sight more than 30 years ago.

This new implant has made a huge difference to her life.

A big difference entirely because I read the post, read books, do crosswords,

Suduco. Amazing. One happy bunny.

So today, the cutting-edge technology, restoring vision.

Sheila has age-related macular degeneration, or AMD.

It affects the middle part of your vision and is the biggest source of sight loss in the UK. By age 60, one in 200 of us will be impacted by the condition.

Age-related macular degeneration is one of the most common eye conditions of patients from the age of 55 to 60

honours suffer from. Mahi Muckett is a consultant surgeon at Moorefield's Eye Hospital and an

associate professor at University College London. There's two forms. There's a wet form which is

treatable. And then there's a dry form for which there's no actual therapy to restore the vision
