Summary

On July 25, French President Emmanuel Macron said France will formally recognize a Palestinian state at the United Nations General Assembly in September. The next week, on July 30, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Britain will also recognize a Palestinian state unless “the Israeli government takes substantive steps to end the appalling situation in Gaza, agree to a ceasefire and commit to a long-term, sustainable peace, reviving the prospect of a two-state solution.”

From executive producer Isaac Saul, this is Tangle.

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening and good evening and welcome to the Tangle podcast, a place we get views from across the political spectrum, some independent thinking, and a little bit of my take.

0:27.9

I'm your host, Isaac Sol, and on today's episode, we're going to be talking about the push for Palestinian statehood.

0:34.5

We're going to be breaking down some press releases, comments, statements from a few

0:40.8

major players in NATO about Palestinian statehood. I'm going to share some views from the left

0:45.9

and the right here in the U.S. and, of course, some international views for this story.

0:49.6

And then I'll give my take. A couple of quick heads up before we jump into the main newsletter and

0:55.2

podcast. First of all, we have a correction to issue from yesterday. In response yesterday's

1:01.4

reader question on the conflict between Cambodia and Thailand, we wrote that the former

1:05.6

country of Siam was a French colony. This is not true. While France colonized neighboring countries, Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia, and Siam did seed territory

1:15.4

to France, the country actually maintained its independence throughout the colonial era.

1:20.1

We conflated Siams breaking into countries, Cambodia, and Thailand with other post-colonial

1:25.3

partitions, and we deeply regret the error.

1:28.8

This is our 143rd correction in Tangles 313 week history, and our first correction since

1:35.0

August 4th. We track corrections and place them at the top of the newsletter in an effort to maximize

1:39.5

transparency with our readers. Next, we have a quick few plugs that I want to throw your way. First of all,

1:48.2

we're going to be taking our annual summer recess next week from August 11th to the 17th. This means

1:55.4

that there will not be a tangle newsletter or a podcast or a Sunday edition for the whole week next week, though we are going to

2:03.1

be releasing a very special YouTube video on Monday, so stay tuned for that. Congress is in recess,

2:08.5

and we think it's a good time to get a little rest and allow you and us to breathe. That being

2:13.0

said, we will be giving you a lot to think about while we're out. Tomorrow, we're announcing some exciting new changes in our annual state of Tangle

2:20.9

newsletter.
