Summary

Forrest and Dr. Rick explore “manifesting:” the idea that our thoughts impact the world around us, and by changing those thoughts we can change our lives. Talking about manifesting is complicated, because on the one hand our thoughts really do matter. On the other, manifesting is closely tied to a small mountain of problematic pseudoscience. They discuss and debate some of the issues with manifesting and the law of attraction before focusing on how to apply key psychological principles to create the life you want. Rick and Forrest talk about creating clarity around our goals, setting intentions, improving self-worth and self-efficacy, and overcoming some of the negative unconscious beliefs that can get in our way, before exploring authenticity, consistent effort, and working with fear and inhibition. Then Rick closes the episode by walking us through a practical example of how to change a belief. You can watch this episode on YouTube. psychology, and self-help broadly, you've probably bumped into the idea of manifest it. and The basic idea behind manifesting is that our thoughts impact the world around us,

0:34.6

and we attract to us things that have a similar energy to the thoughts that we think.

0:39.8

So if we think positive thoughts, we get positive things, and if we think negative thoughts, well, not so much.

0:45.0

This means that just by changing how we think we can change our lives.

0:49.0

And we've explored many ideas that are similar to that here on this podcast.

For example, cognitive restructuring is a process in cognitive behavioral therapy

where people work to challenge and deconstruct unhelpful thoughts and replace them with more useful ones.

Talking about manifesting is complicated

1:15.0

because our thoughts really do matter

1:17.0

and there's a psychology behind the ideas that are

1:20.0

embedded in manifesting that is based on some very useful and very, very real stuff.

1:26.9

And it makes sense to explore that stuff on a podcast like ours.

1:30.0

But the problem at least for me is that manifesting is also closely tied to a bunch of ideas that are the trifecta of extremely popular, largely disconnected from reality, and, at least in my opinion,

1:44.0

kind of actively harmful to people.

1:46.2

So we're going to be waiting through manifesting today
