| 0:41.2 | All right, let's get to it. Today I want to talk to you about the power that comes from continual self-actualization. So what is self-actualization? Well, the term was made famous by Abraham Maslow. Maybe you've heard of Maslow's hierarchy of needs. What's interesting is that self-actualization is actually at the top of that pyramid. Here's the definition of self-actualization. It's the desire to become the most that you can be. Now according to Maslow, and I'm paraphrasing here, the final step to having all your needs met, you know, once we have the basics, of course, of food, safety, and friendship is to come to terms with ourselves on issues like our morality, our integrity, |
| 1:16.5 | our creativity, you know, our spontaneity, our problem solving, you know, a lack of prejudice |
| 1:21.3 | and really an acceptance of facts. Now when you're in conflict with yourself or with society, |
| 1:26.7 | what you'll find is the opposite of these, you know, being immoral and unproductive and problem focused and prejudiced and we're ignoring the facts. So again, being self-actualized is embracing the idea of becoming your best self. Now of course there's lots of benefits to becoming self-actualized. A self-actualized person is independent. They're not |
| 1:45.2 | a slave to the thoughts or opinions of others. You know, they're comfortable with the unknown. |
| 1:49.8 | They're compassionate and kind and have an acceptance of everybody. They have a sense of spontaneity |
| 1:55.0 | and aren't afraid to live in the moment. Self-actualized people often dedicate themselves to a higher |
| 1:59.5 | mission or cause because they see a bigger picture. As you may guess, becoming self-actualized people often dedicate themselves to a higher mission or cause because they see a bigger picture. |
| 2:01.6 | As you may guess, becoming self-actualized is actually a bit of a spiritual journey. |
| 2:05.6 | It's a spiritual battle of your base forces against your higher forces. |
| 2:09.6 | So how do you become self-actualized? How does someone do that? First, there's no destination with this. |
| 2:14.6 | It's not about perfection or attainment. It's a lifelong |
| 2:18.0 | journey of becoming better every day. I consider myself self-actualized simply because I'm working |
| 2:22.7 | at it every single day. Second, and this is huge. Practice acceptance. Accept people as they are. |
| 2:28.3 | Accept situations as they come up. Accept the unknown. Now, third is to live spontaneously |
| 2:33.2 | and really strive to enjoy each moment as it comes, especially the unexpected moments, the ones maybe you hadn't counted on. Sometimes it's those surprises we all get, but sometimes wish we hadn't that'll help us grow. |
| 2:44.0 | Fourth, appreciate the small things in life as often as you possibly can. Things like the sun on your face, the hug from a spouse, the smell of the air, the taste of your meal, |
| 2:54.2 | all the tiny little things you take for granted. |
