Summary

In this solo episode, Julie shares a deeply personal story about discovering the profound connection between physical movement and mental health.  What began as a lesson in self-care during her early medical training became a lifelong understanding that our physical habits—exercise, sleep, nutrition, and recovery—are essential to maintaining emotional resilience.  This experience reshaped her approach to physical health—not as a performance pursuit, but as a foundation for emotional balance and well-being.   Please share your thoughts with [email protected], or connect with me on Instagram @JulieFoucher.Related Episodes:Ep 139 - Stress: The Elephant in the Room with Dr. George Slavich Ep 299 - Dr. Wayne Jonas on Whole Person Care for Cancer and Healing If you like this episode, please subscribe to Pursuing Health on iTunes and give it a rating or share your feedback on social media using the hashtag #PursuingHealth. was about one that I learned personally, the impact of the physical behaviors that I do on my mental and emotional health.

0:44.1

And I learned it in a big way.

0:45.7

So just to give you a little bit of background, for me, exercise has always been something that I have loved and then has felt really good for my body.

0:55.5

So whether it was running around in the backyard as a kid or playing early sports like soccer

1:00.4

and tennis or then really competitive gymnastics and track and field in high school and after that,

1:06.0

I went on to do CrossFit and compete in CrossFit at a high level. I've always been really active and I've

1:11.7

known that that's something that my body just loves to do. But there's nothing better than a stress

1:16.5

test, right, where you take away one of those behaviors and see how your body responds to really

1:22.7

understand the impact that it's having. And that happened for me during my first two weeks of

1:27.4

medical residency.

1:28.9

So I had just graduated from medical school and I was beginning my residency in family medicine.

1:35.4

And family medicine is really a jack of all trades. So we gain experience in every place from

1:42.0

labor and delivery to pediatrics to in the hospital, the office,

1:45.9

even the nursing home. And my very first two weeks as a resident, I was going to be on labor and

1:52.9

delivery. Now, I loved this environment and this rotation as a medical student, but as a resident,

1:59.0

it comes with a lot more responsibility, a lot higher

2:02.2

expectations. And it was my first experience as a resident in general. And so I was really nervous and I

2:07.8

really just wanted to do a good job. Now, this is also a rotation where there are long hours.
