These are but a few of what are considered our country's most notorious haunted houses.

Some have haunted histories dating back to the earliest

days in America. A few feature stories that aren't mere hauntings but demonic

activity with residents who were compelled to commit atrocities by evil spirits.

Others like the Lelerie House are haunted because of evil human beings who weren't possessed

by demons, or at least not demons from another realm.

These were human demons who thought nothing of the sanctity of life,

and their crimes against humanity resulted in the restless souls who wander courtyards and

stairways.
