0:00.0 | Hey guys, it's Anthony, we got a couple more episodes from the backlog while Jeff is still selfishly enjoying his storybook wedding, the jerk. |
0:09.0 | Sorry about the audio quality on these there from an earlier time so many days ago, |
0:14.8 | before we had somebody come in and show us how to do audio correctly so apologies for that and once again do not tell Jeff that I spent the patreon money it's like I tell you guys one thing I ask one thing of you guys don't tweet it Jeff and tell him that I spent |
0:28.6 | the patreon money and it's like you don't listen it's like you never listen anyway enjoy the episode and don't tell Jeff. |
0:35.7 | You are a river folk and you will die river folk. Exactly. Probably without insurance. This is we have concern. Hi Jeff, can I have a nice carbonnie. What are we talking about today? |
1:00.6 | How did articles sent to us by Amber Hinden on Twitter? Thanks Amber. This is a great one. It's it's an older article but I like the message. It's creative people say no. It's all about how creative people in order to do what they do have to say no to most of the opportunities that I have a very difficult time with this. I have a worst time with it. |
1:23.0 | This is one of the most biggest problems I have and even talking about it makes you feel a little pretentious. It's like people are asking me to do stuff all the time but I have this you know I you don't like saying no to people and you don't. |
1:38.9 | I do want to do everything. I do want to carve out time for everything but if you start going down that path which I have done many times of just saying yes and yes and yes and you get to the point where you're so frazzled and there's so many things going on you're trying to juggle so many of what other people want from you that you have very little time left for your own creative output. |
2:02.9 | Yeah and it my thing about it is that it feels counterintuitive especially when you're trying to make a career as a creative person because if you do what I found is if you're working if you're doing something at the moment and it's doing well 9000 other people will be like hey let's work together I like this thing you're doing and because you're so worried well nothing lasts forever you're worried that no product no project is going to last forever which is the correct thing to worry about because nothing in this universe. |
2:32.9 | Last forever that's the way the universe is built right you're you're like well I should do a lot of this other stuff so I have more things going on so when this thing goes away I have other stuff to do I think you hit on a really major one for me which is that feeling of of knowing that I have no security. |
2:50.9 | I'm not for anything you know that I am I cannot rest because this thing is going to end and I don't know where my next job is yeah and that feeling leads you to to kind of be a little bit desperate and crazy all the time with taking on new projects and when people say you know just let me just have a few minutes of your time to do this one thing I like that people like me I'm feeling wanted I like going all they want me to do that. |
3:18.9 | Oh yeah I love when people want me to do that. Yeah sure I'll do that and and then you start under valuing yourself because you start giving away your time over and over. |
3:30.9 | I had somebody tell me the coolest thing recently where he was saying that there's a famous story about Picasso somebody goes up to Picasso in a restaurant and goes oh my god I'm such a fan Picasso would you draw something on this napkin for me and |
3:43.9 | Picasso draw some doodle something in a hands of two and he goes okay that would be $200 and he's like $200 you took you four seconds to make and he goes no it took me a lifetime. |
3:53.9 | And it's kind of true it's like you know everything that I have done led me to this moment and I can't devalue that by constantly just giving away my time. |
4:05.9 | But it's a hard thing to reconcile and you're like I just like being. Yeah well for me it's it's more that that napkin doodle took more physical time than you think because napkin doodles add up right. |
4:19.9 | You do napkin doodle Picasso does a napkin doodle right hands it to this guy everybody in the bar goes oh Picasso's doing napkin doodles. |
4:27.9 | Yeah exactly. And then you have a line of 30 people right from napkin doodles every napkin doodle takes five minutes all of a sudden you have three. |
4:34.9 | All of a sudden you have three hours of napkin doodles in front of you and this is everything this is this is emails this is Twitter this is. |
4:41.9 | I don't this is just showing up and helping out a friend or the big one in San Francisco is I love your work. |
4:49.9 | I'd love to ask you a couple questions because I'm sort of in the same field can I buy you a cup of coffee that's the big San Francisco thing let me buy a cup of coffee right no. |
4:58.9 | No I'm sorry why don't you ask me those questions via email and why don't I tell you that I'll get that email back to you within seven days and not tomorrow and not an hour after you send it and that's that's the thing is I've kind of I used to say yes to everything because of because of two things not just because of insecurity but because I don't know I was I was new I was trying to prove myself or trying to create more opportunity or just trying to have more fun because things are far |
