Summary

What was mostly expected Tuesday: the Big Ten and Pac-12 announcing they were pushing football to the spring. What wasn't? The Pac-12 also announcing it will not have any sports of any kind played before January. So 12 Pac-12 men's basketball programs just had more than 100 nonconference games taken out from underneath them. Truth is, the rest of the sport is probably going to follow suit, but those decisions aren't expected until September. Gary Parrish and Matt Norlander open this pod by discussing the Pac-12, and then they get to speculating and building out what college basketball and the NCAA needs to do in order to best ensure college hoops doesn't end up like college football (21:50). Parrish reveals his template for holding college basketball's regular season and NCAA Tournament in 2021, while Norlander reveals some of his details on a 2021 NCAA Tournament that would be hosted and played in one state and mostly one city: Indianapolis.

Hey there, it's Carrie Parish. It's Tuesday, August 11, 2020. Welcome back to the CBS Sports Eye on College basketball podcast where we sometimes discuss

0:41.0

Camel fighting and leaky black Matt Norlander is here with me and needless to say it's been a wild day in the world of college athletics.

0:48.0

Just days after the Mac and Mount West announced they will not have college football in the fall.

0:53.0

The big 10 and the pack 12 announced the same thing with the pack 12 taking it a step further and announcing it will have no sports competitions until at least 2021.

1:04.0

That means there will be no pack 12 teams playing college basketball before at least January. If we're being honest, this has been expected for a while.

1:13.0

So it's not out of nowhere news, but it's still something to hear it become official. So Norlander, let's just start here with your reaction to today's real big college basketball headline.

1:24.0

Well, this was expected by the way I just mentioned real quick as we start here. Have you seen the video of urban Meyer talking on big 10 network and there's a half naked guy behind them. Have you seen this?

1:36.0

You know what I saw somebody tweeted I meant to watch it and I think I got distracted by something so I haven't actually watched it yet, but I'm looking forward to it.

1:44.0

Oh my gosh, this has been a day, man. I mean, for like in the middle of all this and I'm going to answer the question, but like we have by the way, we have a VP pick.

1:52.0

Like Kamala Harris gets announced pack 12 sports are out until January 1st. There's a half naked dude walking behind urban Meyer, which is a throwback to the NFL draft earlier this season.

2:01.0

The same because urban Meyer doesn't realize. He doesn't realize that he's still on camera. So he's trying to make like a cut it out. No, no face. Don't know the story behind that. That's absolutely incredible. If you have not seen it, please go find it. That's search bubble Prague. He's, that's just too, too funny.

2:16.0

As for the news, man, this came on. I was working on another story that's going to go up later this week. Didn't even have Twitter open because I was trying to try this thing where I try and focus entirely and haven't Twitter open is just terrible for your workflow as you can test to GP and then got two texts and about 25 seconds that said pack 12 probably not having basketball until January.

2:43.0

So then fired off about seven texts and about 30 seconds to people that I thought hopefully would get back to me three of them did and then confirmed it that there is no pack 12 basketball and in no, no winter. There's no sports competition at any pack 12 institution until at least January 1st.

3:00.0

Now this was expected in terms of that being the upshot of all of it. This is ahead of the timeline. No, this coaches did not even find out until 10 minutes, maybe 15 minutes tops before the press release even went out there. So yes, as you and I've talked to coaches throughout college basketball in the past month plus they have been bracing for a conference only season that starts in January.

3:24.0

We've mentioned this on the podcast before, but for the pack 12 to make this kind of move, which has echoes and shades of what we saw with the Ivy League about a month ago when it canceled all competition and all of its sports for the fall semester, which falls just shy of January.

3:39.0

So it's not completely unprecedented, but at the power conference level. Yes, it is, it is a significant thing and I don't think that coaches for the most part were expecting this to come down explicitly today with basketball because the biggest news big 10.

3:53.0

Pack 12 football pushed at least until the spring, but obviously it does have a big impact on college troops and is the this to me is the first big signal of the inevitable that we are not going to have college basketball in November and most likely in December.

4:08.0

It just arrived on August 11th. I didn't think that was going to arrive until we got to September.
