Beyond the fence stretched a wide field that eventually gave way to scattered trees and dirt

roads that ran darker than the rest of the county after sunset.

There were few streetlights, and once night settled in fully, the open land seemed to expand.

That evening it was just four of them. Joey, his younger brother, Jeremy, Rosanna, and him. The night before, a small group of friends had experimented

with a Ouija board. Nothing dramatic had occurred. No violent movement, no obvious manifestations.
