Summary

If you care about democracy in America, then you care about the upcoming election in Virginia this November. And before you think yeah, I don’t live in Virginia, I’ll think I’ll skip it, I want you to think about the Wisconsin Supreme Court race in April, or the Ohio special election this August. Most of us don’t live in those states, but our attention on those elections, and their successful results, put the Republicans and their increasingly extremist agenda, on notice. So today we’re going to talk to two Virginia candidates: Senate Candidate, and current House Delegate, Danica Roem, and social media star and now House Delegate Jessica Anderson. Virginia is THE most important race in the country right now. The next big election to WIN. It’s the opportunity to give the Republican Party and their abortion restricting, book banning, voter suppressing, soft supremacy the double middle finger and say not this time, not on our watch. You're kind of to me this next generation of politician, you know, which is really an

0:04.5

old kind of concept, which is that our representatives should be of the people,

0:09.5

familiar with the lives of the people they represent. Not some elite privileged class who

0:14.5

don't even have the remotely same concerns as the people that they're trying to represent.

Hello and welcome to the Politics Girl podcast. I'm your host,

Lee McGowan. Let's get into it. If you care about democracy in America, then you care

0:37.0

about the upcoming election in Virginia. And before you tune out and think, yep,

0:40.5

I don't live in Virginia, I think I'll skip it. I want you to think about the Wisconsin

0:44.4

Supreme Court race in April and the Ohio Special Election this August. Most of us don't live in

0:49.5

those states, but our attention on those elections and their successful results puts the Republicans

0:55.2

and their increasingly extremist agenda on notice. They say, hey, guess what? The majority of us

1:01.6

don't believe our politicians have a right to decide what we do with our own bodies. We don't

1:05.8

believe the minority should have the power over the majority and we believe we should have access

1:10.1

to the vote and that our votes should count. And the Republicans are not loving that.

1:15.9

Right now, the governor of Virginia is a man named Glenn Youngkin, who is basically a smart

1:19.8

dissentist dressed in a Mitt Romney costume. He's an anti-vax, anti-choice, far-right extremist,

1:25.2

disguised as a good-natured suburban dad. But it's an act. He knew he couldn't win Virginia,

1:30.7

a state that went to Biden by 10 points by going full mega. But if he is set free, that is exactly

1:36.8

how he is going to govern. He ran a centrist campaign to appeal to independence and swing voters,

1:42.1

but he kept getting caught on video admitting his true plans. He pushed to make voting harder for

1:47.0

Virginians. He's unabashedly anti-abortion and anti-LGBTQ. He believes parents, not teachers,

1:53.4

should dictate what schools teach, especially when it comes to race and sex, and he believes that
