Okay, so today we're doing a story and this is one of the first episodes we ever did.

It was released last March and I remember thinking about how badly the league had been

affected by COVID and was trying to think of any other medical issue

that even came close in the NBA's history. This is how I discovered that Walt Davis had polio.

Not the Greyhound, the UNC legend Walt Davis, but the other much older Walt Davis. Thank you,

Reddit. But Walt had polio in his

childhood long before he won a title with the Philadelphia Warriors and the St. Louis Hawks.

Like I said, much older Walt Davis. The only real public health crisis that the NBA had crossed

paths with and confronted on a magnitude even close to

what COVID entailed was HIV and AIDS. You know the story because we all know the story.

Magic Johnson announced that he'd contracted HIV on November 7, 1991 in what would become known

as the announcement. What followed, what actually followed, isn't as well known.

Magic made his return from the 1992 All-Star Game 30 years ago.

On this episode, we cover what the NBA did and didn't do in between, their rights and their wrongs.

And Jordan and I talked about COVID too and the parallels in how

the NBA acted in both crises, which, listening back now is a fascinating time capsule a year

later. Today is the All-Star Draft and next weekend is the All-Star game. It's been 30 years

since Magic Johnson suited up and brave the world for his final
