We're 11 weeks into 2024 as I speak and 18 Australian women have been murdered so far this year.

Among them, Samantha Murphy, who disappeared during a Sunday morning jog and whose remains have yet to be found,

and Suitha Madigani, whose body was found in a bin by the side of the road in country Victoria.

Her husband had left the country with their son by the time the discovery was made.

This is a terrible start to the year, even for us, who've grown pathetically used to women being murdered.

The only surprise left infemicide for us is when police charge a suspect seemingly entirely unrelated to the victim,

as in the case of Samantha Murphy.
