Hi everybody, welcome to Smarter News.

I'm Jenna and this is a rare late night podcast recording.

It is 10 p.m. Central time on Tuesday, December 9th, but I felt compelled to do some reporting for you. And I wish I could tell you it's rare

that we work late into the evening at Smarter News, but it's not. And it's because I have so

much passion for what we do. It's important to me that we provide a new service to you. So there

are moments that it doesn't matter, the hour, the day of the week, that I will make whatever effort I can to make sure you have what you need.

And there are two moments where I really can think that that happens. One is if there's a newsworthy event taking place, and you need somewhere to go where you can get the who, what, where, when, how, and why and really just get a foundation for the story during a very chaotic or confusing time. That's something I believe we can provide you in a quick, easy, nonpartisan way. So if something's newsworthy, we're going to try to figure it out. We're not a 24-hour newsroom, but when we can, when we feel it's the right moment to step, and we're going to make sure you have what you need. The second time that I feel most compelled is it doesn't have to be all about

the headline, the flashy, splashly headline. It could be just simply a feeling of moral obligation.

I look at you as extended family, as a community, and I want you to have the best information.

And in this cluttered media environment, sometimes it's hard to see what's really important

or what can really affect our families.

And I have a real physical reaction sometimes to a story that I see, read, or hear about.

That's the only way I can describe it.

It's almost instinctual where I think

this is the moment that I have to step in front of a microphone or share something with you because

I think it's that important for your family. What's interesting about the story that's in front of us

today is it really has both components. It is a newsworthy story, but there's also a feeling of

obligation. I know it's a very busy time a year.

We got a lot of other things to focus on.

And I will guarantee you that the story that I'm going to share with you,

although it may have the potential to impact your family the most,

likely will not get the front page coverage that other stories will.
