I've been asked to talk to you guys about money and wealth and things like that, business and so on.

The institute that I run has economics as one of its concerns.

I've been studying Catholic social doctrine for a very, very long time now.

Of course, that's a kind of central concern of Catholic social doctrine as well.

But what I thought I would do today

is really kind of focus on some older resources

in the tradition that raise questions about problems

associated with wealth.

We can talk in question and answer period

about any things that you might want to discuss

with regard to more, I guess, current concerns about wealth.

But I thought I'd just at least begin by looking at some of these resources,

because one of the things that often happens in conversations like this,

and you probably have seen it if you follow it at all,

Pope Francis's interventions into economic issues,

is that people become suspicious of the church's, you know,

concern for economics, for areas related to economics.

You may recall, as a kind of, for instance,

Steve Bannon saying recently that the only reason the Catholic bishops care about immigration

is because they want Hispanics, right, in their pews.

They want their money.
