Summary
TheĀ Lewis and Clark Expedition, also known as theĀ Corps of Discovery Expedition, was the United States expedition to cross the newly acquired western portion of the country after theĀ Louisiana Purchase. TheĀ Corps of DiscoveryĀ was a select group ofĀ U.S. ArmyĀ andĀ civilianĀ volunteers under the command of CaptainĀ Meriwether LewisĀ and his close friend Second LieutenantĀ William Clark. Clark and 30 members set out fromĀ Camp Dubois, Illinois, on May 14, 1804, met Lewis and ten other members of the group inĀ St. Charles, Missouri, then went up theĀ Missouri River. The expedition crossed theĀ Continental Divide of the AmericasĀ near theĀ Lemhi Pass, eventually coming to theĀ Columbia River, and theĀ Pacific OceanĀ in 1805. The return voyage began on March 23, 1806, atĀ Fort Clatsop, Oregon, and ended on September 23 of the same year.
