Whether because the Lakers get up for the new in-season tourney or because the Lakers, as it turned out, had a pretty fortunate draw in Group A (Memphis, Portland and Utah are somewhere between bad and terrible, depending on your POV) or a little bit of both, it's hard to argue the results. Tuesday, the Lakers led wire-to-wire, routing the Jazz at the Crypt, 131-99. The Lakers win Group A (4-0) and now have run their record to 9-6 overall, and took full advantage of a soft spot in their schedule ahead of a tough game Wednesday at home against the Mavericks and a tough road trip starting Saturday in Cleveland. (The Cavs, it's worth noting, could be without Donovan Mitchell.) Tuesday, though, the Lakers were in full control. Virtually everyone who played contributed in a very positive way, starting with Anthony Davis (26/16) and LeBron James (17/7/9), bolstered by good games from D'Angelo Russell (20 points, eight assists, no turnovers) and Austin Reaves (19/5/5). Other good numbers - 24 minutes for James, 29 for Davis. If there's a negative, it's that Cam Reddish left the game in the first quarter with a strained groin, and didn't return. No word yet on how long he might be out. Max Christie soaked up many of those minutes and played well. But losing Reddish would definitely be a blow to a team that has been playing shorthanded all year. At 9-6, the Lakers are in good shape, and as LeBron said after the game, they don't really know what they are quite yet. Could be worse.
