it On the 4th of June, 1900, the sound of cannon fire resounded through the night, reverberating against

the building surrounding Church Square in Pretoria.

It was the capital city of a young state called the Zewid Afrikaansh Republic.

Also known as the South African Republic or the Tsar.

Z-A-R or Tsar.

It's all, it's like, it's all caps Z-A-R, but Z-A-R. And it was being invaded by the British Empire. Shocking.

You see, the Tsar in its neighbouring state, the Oragni Rest Vriesat, or Orange Free State, have been founded and settled

by the descendants of Dutch, German, and French colonists just 50 years earlier.

They felt oppressed by the British's rule over the Cape colony.

It had moved further inland in 1835, establishing their own colonies, and had eventually

managed to persuade the British that they were no longer British citizens.

Those settlers now referred to themselves as burgers like the food.
