Before the last presidential election in 2020, a reporter wrote a story that predicted the future.

I remember reading it. It was one of those pieces of journalism. I'll never forget.

Though it's hard to put myself back into that moment in time, into that headspace.

When the frightening things the reporter was saying were about to happen, hadn't happened yet.

And I still had to wonder, is this guy right?

Will the things his story is predicting become true?

But he was.

And they did.

The reporter's name was Barton Gelman.

In his story for the Atlantic,

he laid out ahead of time the specific tactics

then-President Donald Trump and his allies

would use to attempt to stay in power, regardless of the outcome of the election.

The story was called the election that could break America.

Barton Gellman predicted that Trump would never concede defeat.

He identified January 6, 2021 specifically, as a date that could see chaos.

He reported ahead of time that there would likely be immense pressure on Vice President Mike Pence to not certify the electoral vote.

Harton wrote all this in September 2020, a full month and a half before Election Day, before

Trump stepped out on that election night at the White House

and delivered a speech, insisting the election had been stolen from him.

All of us here today do not want to see our election victory stolen.

We will stop the steel.
