Today's passage we'll be reading from Matthew 313 to 4.4.

Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John, but John tried to deter him, saying, I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me? Jesus replied,

Let it be so now. It is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.

Then John consents that as soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At the moment, the heaven was open, and he saw the

spirit of God descending like a dove and Aladdin on him. And a voice from heaven said,

this is my son, whom I love with him all with him, I am well pleased.

Then Jesus was led by the spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.

After fasting for 40 days and 40 nights, he was hungry.

The tempter came to him and said,

If you are the son of God, tell these stones to become bread.

Jesus answered, it is written.

Man should not live on bread alone,

but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.

This is the word of the Lord.

You have been fed a lie.

You are not meant to be independent.

We have a myth in our culture, the lone wolf, the lone hero, the self-made man or woman.

And even as our culture moves towards teams from Superman to the Justice League, from Ironman to Avengers, there's still

a desire to be able to stand alone, to be truly self-sufficient, to have your own life and

powers and strength apart from others with no need for anyone else.

Now, some of this desire to stand alone

is based out of a fear of needing others,
