Here in conversation with Spencer Mizzin, historian Saul David answers listener questions on the Indian Rebellion of 1857. To start, I wondered if I could ask you how we should describe this event now, is it the Indian mutiny or the Indian

rebellion? Because I've seen it called both. You can call it both. I mean, I think if we were

having this discussion in India, they would want it to be called the Great Rebellion of 1857.

They might even describe it, Spencer, as the first Great War of Independence.

I mean, there's a reason why that is problematical, that second term, but certainly the Great Rebellion of 1857.

I think it's probably the term that most people would feel most comfortable with today.

When I wrote my book, Indian Mutiny 20 or so years ago, I mean, the question was asked then,
