| 0:00.0 | All right, this is gonna be the idiot's guide to squirrel hunting with Chris Ellis of Timmy Triggers because you know what I think I am the idiot. |
| 0:13.3 | This episode of Gun Talk Hunt is brought to you by Fronkey. If you haven't checked out the affinity series, you're gonna want to do this right after the podcast. |
| 0:22.1 | Welcome in Gun Talk Hunters. I am your host, KJ Flabber and KJ, although today it's kind of semi-curved Bill KJ. Today, today I'll be honest with you. I'll be completely honest with you. Today is a selfish, very, very selfish podcast because I want to learn more about squirrel hunting and there is nobody out there better than Timmy Triggers. Chris Ellis, Chris, how you doing, man? |
| 0:48.9 | Good, KJ. Appreciate it. Merry Christmas. Merry Christmas, man. It's good to be alive. It's good. It's a good season and squirrel season. All right, let's just jump right into it. So when I used to squirrel hunt as a kid, it was you go in the woods, you set down and man, you'll see a little bushy tail run by and then there he is. That's your target. |
| 1:13.6 | You do it a little bit different. Yeah, now you poke the bear here. If you want to talk about squirrel hunting, I mean, I just want to let you know you wow me up now. So I, but see, I knew that. I knew that coming in. I know, I know exactly who to go to and I've got a German short hair pointer now that will not leave squirrels alone. He is, that's his number one goal. And one day I'm going to break it like he's going to catch one one day. And I don't know if he knows what he's going to do. |
| 1:43.6 | That's right. That's right. Yeah. So the still hunting for squirrels, we all grew up doing that. You know, I'm from West Virginia, lifelong West Virginia grew up squirrel hunting when I was old enough about not in carrier gun. So I understand a lot about squirrel hunting. I understand also that, you know, you can sit on the stump or, you know, you can stop them through the woods that kind of stuff still hunt. And that's a very effective way. I just happened to my entire adult life. And even before I became adult, I've always had a squirrel doll. |
| 2:13.6 | Or there may have been a brief time. I didn't have one, but it wasn't very long. So I kind of understand the scroll off fascination. And that, no, I'll turkey. I'm totally, yeah, there's, I will, I will tell you this. There are three to three reasons. There's a lot more reasons to go to Chris Allis. But one is good trigger. Two is squirrel hunt and three is turkeys. I, if you want to learn more and more about what you're doing with those three things. Man, this is the guy to do it. |
| 2:42.5 | But no, I've, squirrel dogs is a new thing to me. It is. But I've been, I've been keeping up with you on social medias. And I know you're kind of, you're kind of trying in a new one right now, right? Yeah, I have a new six month old pup named blue. |
| 2:58.7 | You know, in six month old puppies are puppies. So blue goes walking into woods with me. He did show us on the other day. |
| 3:06.0 | He tracked a squirrel and went up to the tree and looked up the tree for the squirrel. So for a six month old puppy, that's, I mean, that's about as good as it is against now. |
| 3:15.9 | Having said that the month of December, January, February, where I'm from, that is prime time squirrel season. I mean, the squirrels are out sometimes it's cold. But as long as you have enough ambient temperature from the sun, the squirrels are come out and they'll move sometime throughout the day. |
| 3:32.2 | There's no leaves on the trees. It's just, it's, it's fantastic. So my December, January, February will be nothing but squirrel hunting for me. |
| 3:41.5 | And so, so how do you know? I, man, speak to me like I'm reading an idiot's guide to, to squirrel dogs and squirrel hunting. That's how that's my level right now. |
| 3:54.6 | One, what makes a good squirrel dog and what are you looking for? |
| 3:58.6 | Well, so there's, there's a whole books and theories about what makes a good squirrel dog. It depends on how you like to hunt. |
| 4:06.5 | Is exactly, you know, what the dog is supposed to do is go hunting for you and provide you with an opportunity to see more game, get more game and have a relationship with this dog. |
| 4:16.7 | The dog is like most dogs just wants to please this master. So you really, really, really praise the positive aspects you're looking for and you kind of ignore the negative. |
| 4:26.8 | You're going to remember they are a dog. They are not a robot. So there's a couple of different kinds of dogs. You could have a slight, a sight chasing dog and you can make a lot of different working dogs. A dog that wants to have a job, a dog that has the DNA and it's to do something a hurting dog. |
| 4:45.3 | There's a bunch of different ones that you could use. But essentially what you do is if you want to walk down a country road and a squirrel comes bouncing across the road, runs across the road and goes up the tree, you can make a lot of dogs into a sight chasing squirrel dog. And that's a lot of fun. I've had them. I've got buddies that still prefer that method. |
| 5:03.3 | In other words, they're not tracking. They're not necessarily using their nose. They're using their eyes. They see a squirrel, chase a squirrel, squirrel goes up the tree. They bark like crazy and their reward is gun goes bang, boom comes a squirrel and they get the chop chop chop chop. |
| 5:20.3 | Yeah, that's that's the reward for a lot of sight. And I do like hunting with a sight dog because you don't have the cold tracking. You don't have the squirrel was here two days ago. |
| 5:29.3 | Okay, there's another type of dog that is based on a on a hound on since the track squirrels can be extremely effective. |
