But when it comes to honoring the service and sacrifices

made by our country's working canines,

receiving the proper care and attention after retirement is vital.

There are over 5,500 working canines that serve our federal agencies.

Whether it's apprehending suspects, locating explosives,

uncovering narcotics, or rescuing victims,

working canines are fearless and willing to sacrifice it all to ensure our safety.

The brave service of our working canine heroes is not without consequences, and their work

often results in health problems which lead to expensive veterinary costs

which fall upon the working canine handlers.

That's why two congressmen, each from a different side of the aisle, are working together

to provide a legislative solution to this problem.
