I think a lot of people think about markets almost like these bodies of water.

0:05.0

You know, and it's like, oh, it's this big body of water that we're going after.

0:09.6

And I actually think that the most interesting markets, you have to think of them like currents where you're just

0:16.2

trying to there's something happening in the market that's creating this current where you can have like a plank of wood that you put on the on the

0:25.9

river and it's going to pull you forward versus a market that doesn't really have

0:30.8

that momentum to it you're going to have to build like something really big and fancy to make any progress.

0:37.0

And that's why we care less about market size, because really what you're looking for when you're looking at a market or what are the

0:44.8

dynamics of change, what's the current and momentum that's going to pull the company, make the

0:50.3

job easier for the founders to actually build something that endures.

0:53.4

Today my guest is Sarah Tavall.

0:58.1

Sarah is a partner at Benchmark, one of the most pre-eminent venture capital funds in the world, where she focuses on investing in consumer and marketplace startups.

1:07.0

Prior to Benchmark, Sarah was the first product manager at Pinterest.

1:11.0

And though I normally have a policy against VC's on the

1:14.0

podcast, as you'll see, Sarah thinks very much like a product and growth leader.

1:18.3

And I always learn a ton talking to Sarah about startups and marketplaces.

1:22.8

We also learned in our conversation she used to play rugby and was apparently one of the best

1:26.6

tacklers in her league. In our conversation we unpack two of Sarah's killer frameworks

1:31.6

for building a startup.

1:33.2

One, the hierarchy of engagement,

1:35.7

which is an incredibly useful lens

1:37.6

for trying to figure out how to grow and scale

1:39.9

your consumer startup.
