There was a war. The French and Indian War in 1758, when a group of the Lenape tribe,

native to that area of Berks County, Pennsylvania, emerged from the forest.

They wanted to kill the colonial families that had settled and had been living on the frontier.

Without warning, they jumped out from the trees and chased a man named Frederick away from his

house.

Frederick, in a panic, ran to his neighbor's home, the Gerhardt's, where he knew that they had weapons.

But something went wrong.

Christ of pain and fear were coming from his own home.

He ran back to his house and found both the house and the farm being burned.

One of his children was found shot and dead in his field,

and another child was injured from another shot.

He died three days later.

Another unfortunate story out of the situation was that of Jacob Gerhardt, who heard

the commotion outside and ran with one of his siblings to hide under the bed.

He heard as all of the members of his family were being killed, a man, two women, and six other children. Soon the heat of the fire

that had been started in the property started taking over and he managed to escape,

running for almost a mile to find help. The other sibling burned to death under the bed.

Jacob was alone. He grew up under the care of another family who lived in the

area, and eventually he bought land and built a tavern on it. It was a special place, the tavern.

It overlooked exactly where his family was murdered.
