Summary

While J.K. Rowling celebrates a new UK ruling that classifies “women” as biologically female, casting for the upcoming HBO Max adaptation is underway. Which fans have stuck by the series despite the author’s views, and will others be able to resist the siren call of a brand new TV series? Candice Lim and Kate Lindsay welcome ICYMI’s new producer Vic Whitley-Berry to talk about their feelings of betrayal watching the creator of their childhood favorite series incessantly target trans people online and publicly back anti-trans campaigns. Then, we’re joined by pop culture expert and YouTuber Princess Weekes, who shares her experience helping readers “deconstruct” from the Harry Potter fandom. This podcast is produced by Daisy Rosario, Vic Whitley-Berry, Candice Lim, and Kate Lindsay. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

And when I saw it, I knew you were the one who could explain it to me. It is J.K. Rolling, smoking, smoking a cigar with the caption, I love when a plan comes together.

0:49.4

God, well, first, I hate that that made you think of me.

0:52.3

But second, yes, that's a real photo posted by J.K. Rowling herself.

0:56.3

She hit post, sensibly.

After the U.K. Supreme Court ruled on April 16th that the legal definition of a woman is based on their biological sex.

1:05.3

J.K. Rowling donated 70,000 pounds, which is around $90,000 to women, Scotland.

1:12.1

It's an organization that has been fighting for this ruling for some time. Can I first say that when I saw this photo, I thought it

1:17.3

was a behind-the-scenes shot of the White Lotus because I thought she looked like Jennifer Coolidge.

1:21.9

Oh my gosh. Now I need that like lifetime movie about office with Jennifer Coolidge.

1:30.1

Right. But second, is there a reason that it looked like something Andrew Tate would post?

1:37.3

I mean, I don't know the reasons for a lot of things. J.K. Rowling has posted these past, say, five years. You know, the Harry Potter author has become

1:44.9

increasingly more outspoken against efforts to make the world more inclusive for trans people.

1:50.4

While this ruling may seem like it's just about wording, that definition can now be used to

1:55.0

discriminate against trans people from what bathrooms they use to what kind of health care they

1:59.9

should receive. And to me, this kind of exclusion of the marginalized goes against the whole spirit of what I thought Harry Potter was about.

2:08.0

But I want to bring in someone who can speak to the full impact of this betrayal.
