Summary
There's nothing like finding out a good friend started a show you're deep into so as soon as Kiki Monique/@thetalkofshame got caught up, we dove into our thoughts about the season and its climactic finale. Focusing on a handful of families, each inspired by real former dynasties, it's a historical drama that unfolds at the convergence of old and new money. Being about New York City high society in the late 1880's, it also takes the opportunity to address the inequality and injustices of the time while showing the importance of women, minorities, and working class Americans engaged in the ongoing fight for their rights. Spats about rival opera houses AND learning about history? What's not to love?

| 0:00.0 | Welcome to the high and low podcast. This is your host, Bravo, Bravo, Dracking Bravo. And today we're |
| 0:10.0 | going to talk about the Gilded Age. And just as a disclaimer, I recorded this on Monday, |
| 0:15.0 | August 11th, but then I got hit with a really high fever. I was so sick. I didn't even get to finish |
| 0:19.5 | editing it, but I'm putting it out |
| 0:21.3 | now. So hopefully if you've been missing the Gilded Age, and like me, you're like, |
| 0:25.4 | oh, tonight's the first Sunday without the Gilded Age. Maybe this will tide you over. |
| 0:28.9 | I have been locked in to this historical drama on HBO since season one kicked off. As soon as I |
| 0:37.1 | saw that Julian Fellows was the writer, I knew it was |
| 0:40.2 | going to be amazing because he is the one who wrote Downton Abbey. And of course, if you're |
| 0:44.2 | Downey Wattie Watcher, you know that the mom, the wife, the matriarch in Downton Abbey was part of |
| 0:50.8 | American High Society and she married a man in England with a title. |
| 0:56.2 | So the whole premise of Gilded Age is to talk about these extremely wealthy families |
| 1:00.9 | a la Vanderbilt, a la Astor in New York City, circa the 1800s around the robber barren times. |
| 1:08.6 | And the premise of the show is watching these families that are kind of |
| 1:11.3 | new money try to mesh with old money, vying for power in social circles, who's going to marry who, |
| 1:19.0 | is this advantageous to hang out with this person, let me buy up all the railroads. There's no unions |
| 1:25.3 | yet. It talks about, you know, workplace injustices, all kinds of things. |
| 1:29.1 | All of the isms are full force. Sexism, racism, racism, classism, all the stuff that some people |
| 1:34.6 | want to have back in America now. And yet, very similar to Down Abbey, there's an air of civility and |
| 1:40.2 | order, along with it just being like optically very soothing. The clothes, the lighting, it manages |
| 1:46.6 | to present us with a world that on paper is completely unfathomable and not a place we want to go back |
| 1:52.5 | to, but it shows the allure of the time. And it's not too dissimilar from storylines we see |
