A year ago this week, the Taliban took control of Afghanistan.

And since then, the country's already fragile economy has gone into a tailspin, and millions

of Afghans are facing starvation.

What happened in August was a huge shock because all of a sudden, even the limited aid

flows that were still continued to the country were cut off.

That's our colleague Jessica Denati, who lived in Afghanistan for four years.

Many international banks and companies stopped stealing with Afghanistan pretty much overnight.

The US and its allies, the main employer in the country, or at least the wealthiest employer

in the country left.

And so suddenly you had this huge spike in joblessness along with the near standstill

of the banking system and that delivered a huge shock.

So the economy has gone into freefall.

The country needs money, and it has money, saved in foreign banks in the US and in Europe.

But there's a problem.

That money is frozen.

The US and its allies are refusing to hand it over to the Taliban.

What's now up for debate is what should happen to this money?

Should they give it back to the Taliban government?

Because the economy badly needs this money.

So do you give it back and try and help the population that way?

Or do you continue to use it to try to press the Taliban to do some of the things that the

US wants to see the Taliban do?
