Happy today that we're joined by Dr. Marty McCarrie, who's the commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration.

Great to be with you, Martha. You know, I always like on the Untold Story podcast, doctor, to kind of

give people a better sense of you at the top of it and who you are. And when I go through your

resume, I mean, you have been writing about and covering so many different areas of medicine

over the course of your career. You're an endowed chair in gastrointestinal surgery.

Obviously, your work as a professor at Johns Hopkins. I'm just curious, how do you see your

approach to your career and where it has gone? Just, you know,

I mean, obviously that's a big topic, but just give us a sense of it. Well, Martha, you know,

my career has meandered in many areas of medicine, public health, surgery, oncology,

islet transplantation. I left medical school feeling a bit disillusioned in my third year,

and I pursued a graduate degree in public health at Harvard. And then eventually I missed the patient

care, and I wanted to come back. And you never prepare or plan for a job like being an FDA
