0:00.0 | Hi guys. Hope you had a great week. I'm so excited to share a story with you today that I really |
0:06.8 | found to be one of the more fascinating stories that I read this week. It has to do with American |
0:13.6 | politics, but it has nothing particularly political about it, which I know sounds like sort of a strange combination, |
0:21.9 | but I promise you, this really made me think about the words that we're using, the power |
0:28.4 | of the media, and also just served as a really good reminder that things haven't always been |
0:33.8 | this way. And so I'm really excited to get that for you and talk to you a little bit |
0:38.7 | about that. Speaking of the power of the media, though, I want to talk to you just briefly about |
0:42.3 | hurricane coverage in the news because one of the big news stories this week is Hurricane Helene |
0:47.5 | is going to continue to be a big story going into the weekend. And when we watch the news related |
0:52.4 | to a major storm system, we sort of see two sides of the coin when it comes to the media. On the one hand, you see this is where news can really work. It can work for the American people again. It's where we get to share information immediately that can really save someone's life. I was in Georgia this week, and just yesterday, actually, when Hurricane Helene was starting |
1:13.9 | to really come in and there was a lot of tornado activity. |
1:16.9 | And the local news was really on the cutting edge of that, making sure do the communities |
1:22.2 | know where the tornado was headed? |
1:24.1 | What streets was there believed to be tornadomatic activity? I mean, that's really, |
1:28.7 | that's something that can change someone's entire life. It's where the news can really work. |
1:33.8 | But on the flip side, you can see the news taking advantage sometimes of the storm coverage. |
1:40.5 | And you've seen it, you know, the monster storm, like the animation that looks kind of over the top and seems to sometimes trivialize what could be a really dangerous and deadly situation. On the one hand, you want that information. On the other hand, you don't want that information exploited for some sort of weird media gain. And so you see this. You see this sort of play out. The one area where I always feel a personal |
2:02.8 | and professional responsibility to add a little reporting to hurricane coverage is the following. |
2:07.4 | There is an obsession with categories. You know, what category is storm is cat one, two, |
2:12.6 | three, four, five. You know, we sort of say these things like everybody knows what they mean. |
2:16.6 | Category one is when |
2:18.5 | wind speeds have reached up to 74 miles per hour or above. And that's how we know a storm is |
