Hmm. I think you might correctly read that as at best a backhanded compliment.

And so it was with Charles Evans. a backhanded compliment.

And so it was with Charles Evans, Hughes' acceptance speech, Carnegie Hall in New York City,

taking the nomination of the Republican Party and then reading the reaction in the Springfield Republican newspaper,

which is supposed to be on the GOP side.

And that's how they described the speech. They also said it had heaviness. Oh no, please, Springfield

Republican, no more compliments like that.

But the paper went on. Hughes's speech had no display of flightiness.

Oh God, you are crushing me with your compliments. The president of Harvard Elliot also joins in. He says, he uses speech is lacking in exact measures.

What would he do in the war? We don't know. We know with some precision what President

Wilson would do. Most of the Republican partisan press was very supportive

about Hughes's speaking, maybe just supportive enough.
