Summary

This bonus episode is part of the Small Business Podference presented by Dell Technologies. As small business owners themselves, Emma and Julie wanted to put this topic in the context of their usual content: pop culture. In doing so, they examined how organic celebrity endorsements impact small businesses. They started with a discussion of some instances they’ve noticed themselves, and then got the chance to speak with three small business owners who have been directly impacted by these natural celebrity shoutouts. First, they spoke with Sarah Paiji Yoo, CEO and co-founder of eco-friendly cleaning brand, Blueland. In addition to being a Shark Tank success story, Blueland was notoriously (and organically!) tweeted about by Kim Kardashian West. They spoke to Sarah about the moment she saw that tweet, and the sales increase that transpired as a result of it. They also spoke with Merri Glecker, CEO & Owner of Kashwere - a lifestyle brand very close to Emma’s heart - about the boost experienced by being featured on Oprah’s favorite things. She recounted the phone call from Oprah, and what transpired in the following months. Lastly, they spoke with Jordan Nathan, Founder & CEO of Caraway Home, about his line of chemical free cookware and how influencer marketing has played into his business. *null of these small businesses paid to be included. They were all thoughtfully selected by Emma and Julie, based on their own fondness for and interest in the products.* To learn more about listener data and our privacy practices visit: https://www.audacyinc.com/privacy-policy Learn more about your ad choices. So, basically, you know, when we were presented with this opportunity,

0:04.8

Julie and I were really trying to figure out a way to put this in the context of our podcast

0:10.3

and how to incorporate the idea of small businesses with pop culture and the celebrity content that we talk about.

0:16.8

And there are a lot of different ways to do this, but something that Julie and I have always been really interested in is

0:23.0

organic and at times inorganic celebrity endorsements and the effects that they have on small businesses.

0:29.0

So, what we kind of decided to do, I guess the way that this episode is going to go down is, you know, first we're just going to talk about some celebrity shout outs or endorsements that we've seen.

0:39.0

And I'm sure once you guys can relate to this because they're really fun to talk about.

0:43.0

And then we actually got the chance to speak to some small business owners that have been directly impacted by these celebrity shout outs.

0:50.0

And it was just like so much fun, wasn't it?

0:54.0

So much fun, like so interesting, so informative and really something that I think we care about a lot. So it was so exciting for us to be able to do.

1:02.0

Yeah, and I just want to give a disclaimer. None of the people that we interviewed, you know, we're not getting paid to do this.

1:07.0

These are not getting cut of any of the profits at all from the people that we interviewed. These are just genuinely businesses that we believe in.

1:13.0

And, you know, we took bits and pieces from each of the different conversations that we thought were the most applicable.

1:19.0

And I'm just really excited. I hope you guys enjoyed this as much as we did.

1:23.0

So I want to frame this by putting it in this context. If you guys remember, when Kylie Jenner did her office tour of Kylie Cosmetics, she's going around and she gets it to the part where she's showing her refrigerator.

1:34.0

And she purposely has the videographer make a note to blur out her favorite drink because she said she's like,

1:40.0

if I show this, it'll be sold out immediately if I say it's my favorite, which, you know, if you know nothing about the Kardashian sounds really narcissistic, but it's absolutely accurate.

1:50.0

So accurate to the point where even though they blurred it out, it started a whole trend online of trying to figure out what the drink was.

1:57.0

And people were posting on Twitter and I think even on Reddit saying like, okay, it has this label, this color, like this is what we can tell from the blurred out images because people, especially because it was blurred out they wanted to know so badly.

2:09.0

Yeah. And especially because that was a perfect example of clearly that wasn't a paid thing. Like this was really just her favorite drink.

2:15.0

People are by people, I mean like us also, I think are just obsessed with what celebrities find to be worth it.

2:23.0

You know, like I think we think of people that have all the resources in the world that of course they're going to choose the best of the best.
