Summary

This week: The Farage factor. Our cover piece looks at the biggest news from this week of the general election campaign, Nigel Farage’s decision to stand again for Parliament. Farage appealed to voters in the seaside town of Clacton to send him to Westminster to be a ‘nuisance’. Indeed, how much of a nuisance will he be to Rishi Sunak in this campaign? Will this boost Reform’s ratings across Britain? And could it be eighth time lucky for Nigel? The Spectator's political editor Katy Balls joins the podcast to discuss, alongside former Clacton and UKIP MP, Douglas Carswell (2:32).

Then: Gavin Mortimer reports from France ahead of the European and local elections this weekend, where the country is moving to the right. Marine Le Pen’s National Rally is expected to do well, but, he argues, this has as much to do with the Le Pen brand, as it does Macron’s unpopularity. Joining Gavin to discuss is the French journalist Anne-Elisabeth Moutet (19:25).

And finally: what could the future of tourism look like? Travel writer Sean Thomas explores the growing backlash to tourist overcrowding worldwide, and the recent trend to charge fees to some of the most sought-after locations. Will it solve the issue? Venice-based food and travel correspondent Monica Cesarato joins the podcast to discuss alongside Sean (24:50).

This week, we'll be asking, what's Nigel Farage's game plan?

0:53.2

Has Marine Le Pen revived her fortunes? And could the era of

0:57.2

low-cost tourism be at its end?

1:10.0

Well, it's Wednesday afternoon. The magazine went to press at lunchtime today, and our cover

1:15.1

looks at the biggest election news of the week, which is that Nigel Farage announced he's

1:20.0

not only leading reform into the election, but also standing as a candidate in Clacton.

1:25.0

So how did we come up with this cover?

1:27.0

Well, obviously the news came rather

1:28.1

unexpectedly and I think around 4pm wasn't it on Monday afternoon. So we actually wanted to do a

1:33.6

cover this week that was not looking at the UK election because we sort of thought we've got quite

1:37.3

a long time still until people actually go to the polls. But then when Nigel Farage announced

1:42.2

that he was going to stand as a candidate and lead reform into the general election, it was too big not seduced to cover, really.

1:48.3

And I think our brilliant cover artist, Morton Moreland, has done this fantastic image which summarises the mood of it, rather, which is this figure of Farage, glass shattering as he's flying right in front of Rishi. I think that kind of is the

2:02.3

mood in Westminster, at least, this week. So we sort of had to do it as the cover. Katie Balls went off
