Ethnic Armenian forces in Nagorno-Karabakh have agreed to a Russian-brokered ceasefire following a recent offensive by Azerbaijan.

One of the key terms accepted is the proposal for a complete disarmament. Azerbaijan has demanded a full surrender.

The conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh has a long history with Armenia and Azerbaijan fighting two wars over the region

since the collapse of the Soviet Union. A ceasefire had been in place since a six-week war in 2020,

but tensions remained with Azerbaijan imposing a blockade on the only road into Nagorno-Karabakh from Armenia.

The recent developments have raised concerns about Russia's role in the region and Armenia's shifting alliances, including military exercises with the United States.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky appealed to the United Nations General Assembly for more allies in aid in countering the Russian invasion of Ukraine, framing it as a matter of global security and survival.

Zelensky portrayed Russia as a habitual aggressor, citing its military interventions in Moldova, Georgia, Syria, its increased control over Belarus, and threats against the Baltic states.

He emphasized the global implications of the conflict, including Russia's use of Ukrainian resources as a weapon against the international rules-based order.

Zelensky also criticized Russia's practice of taking Ukrainian children from occupied areas and placing them with Russian families, calling it genocide.

He sought international support for a 10-point settlement program and urged caution against shady dealings in peace negotiations.

President Biden also emphasized the importance of Ukraine's independence in his remarks to the General Assembly.
