It's just after 10 a.m. on June 27, 2000, in the small postcard perfect town of Warren, Massachusetts.

At Commons Pond, the day is already beginning to settle into that familiar early summer rhythm.

The sun is high enough to warm the sand, but not yet unbearable,

and the air carries that quiet anticipation that comes with the real first day of the season.

This is supposed to be the start of something normal. The first day of swimming lessons.

Kids arriving with towels draped over their shoulders,

parents unloading bags from the back seat to their cars, the kind of routine that repeats

itself every summer without much thought.

A mother pulls into the parking lot with her children, expecting exactly that, noise, movement,

the usual signs that things are already underway.

Instead, something feels off almost immediately. It's quieter than it should be,

not completely silent, but missing the background activity that you'd expect at a place like

this. She looks toward the lifeguard stand, expecting to see the familiar outline of 16-year-old

Molly Bish standing above the shoreline, scanning the water the way she's done so many times

before.

But the chair is empty.
