Summary

MAGA personalities are suddenly raging at Tucker Carlson, who just conducted a shocker of an online interview with white nationalist and open antisemite Nick Fuentes. They’re attacking Carlson for hosting a “Nazi-sympathizer” who espouses the “foundation of Nazism,” calling this “sick” and “despicable,” and claiming it shows that the effort to “gatekeep the antisemitic, hateful freaks out of the Republican Party” has “failed.” We think one reason this angered right-wingers is that it revealed too much about MAGA: It can’t keep the hateful views at bay, because the movement constantly traffics in similar ideas, albeit in somewhat more subtle ways. We talked to David Austin Walsh, the author of Taking America Back: The Conservative Movement and the Far Right. He explains how all this sheds light on the importance of racists and other extremists to the MAGA coalition, how it previews the coming post-Trump struggle over the MAGA movement, and how it captures the broader story of the American right’s refusal to police its extremists over the last half-century or more.  Looking for More from the DSR Network? Maga personalities are suddenly raging at a surprising target, Tucker Carlson.

0:36.9

They're angry because Carlson conducted an online interview with white nationalist Nick Fuentes.

0:42.4

In essence, what they said is that this interview helped allow Fuentes' hateful views to get mainstreamed inside the GOP and MAGA coalition.

0:46.6

But it occurs to us that all this belly aching about Carlson and Fuentes might be less than sincere

0:52.0

and that it captures something essential about MAGA.

0:56.0

Maga can't keep the hateful views at bay because the movement constantly traffics in very

1:01.1

similar views, albeit in somewhat more subtle ways. The failure of this kind of gatekeeping on the

1:07.2

far right is a story that goes back half a century on the American right, and this

1:11.6

episode captures that story perfectly. So we invited on David Austin Walsh to explain all this.

1:17.9

He's the author of Taking America Back, the Conservative Movement, and the Far Right, and one of the

1:22.6

best out there at decoding all this stuff. David, good to have you on, man. Yeah, thank you for having me.

1:28.3

So Nick Fuentes appeared with Tucker Carlson, and that's become a big story. Fentes is known

1:33.7

for all kinds of hateful rhetoric, including him saying about the Holocaust, quote, six million

1:39.3

cookies. I'm not buying it, close quote. He's also said Jim Crow benefited its victims.

1:45.2

There's lots and lots and lots of stuff like that out there.

1:47.9

David, can you quickly recap what happened in the Tucker interview?

1:51.6

So Tucker gave Fuentes the softball interview, which went on for about two and a half hours.

1:55.9

It was uploaded last week online.

1:59.0

And Fuentes dialed back to a certain extent his most extreme rhetoric in an order to

2:06.5

sort of maximize his appeal.
