Summary

On Tuesday, President Trump unleashed an angry tirade in which he threatened to stop doling out food stamp payments until Democrats capitulate in the government shutdown. He seethed over “crooked Joe Biden” and made up stuff about food stamp fraud. Coming after a judge ordered payments to continue, Trump’s threat seemed to suggest he’s now directly defying the courts. But then White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt quickly clarified that Trump will obey the law, after all. Given that Trump intended his threat as a dominance display over Democrats, Leavitt undercut him, because she had no choice. We think this shows Trump’s team knows they cannot be seen as breaking the law to deny food to the hungry. We talked to David Dayen, executive editor of The American Prospect, who has a good piece arguing that Trump has lost the shutdown. He demystifies the food stamp battle, explains why Trump’s terrible standing on the economy has made him vulnerable in the standoff, and discusses how this all shows that Democrats need to get in the fight and engage. Then we saw something unusual. White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt quickly clarified that no,

0:52.6

Trump is going to obey the law after all. She offered a

tortured explanation as to what Trump initially meant that wasn't persuasive at all. We think this

1:02.8

shows that Trump's team knows they're in a weak position in the shutdown legally and politically.

1:08.4

They did not want to be perceived as breaking the law to deny food to the

1:12.2

hungry. David Dayan, executive editor of the American prospect, has a good piece arguing that

1:18.1

Trump knows he's lost the politics of this standoff. So we're talking to him about all this

1:23.1

should shape our understanding of what's coming next. Dave, thanks for coming on, man.

1:28.8

Thanks for having me on.

1:36.0

So let's start with this threat. Trump raged on truth social that, quote, snap benefits will be given only when the radical left Democrats open up government, which they can easily do and not before,

1:42.5

close quote. Trump also ranted a bit about crooked Joe Biden and made up some bullshit about how there

1:48.3

was widespread fraud in the program under him and so forth.

1:51.6

Dave, that sure sounded like a direct threat from Trump, but that would defy the courts.

1:56.5

Can you bring us up to date on all that?

1:58.7

Yeah, I mean, what Trump is saying there is going back to what the

2:01.7

administration's position was initially, that they weren't going to tap a contingency fund that

2:08.6

was set up by Congress in the event of a lapse in appropriations or some emergency need.
