0:09.8	and it's almost shocking because all our lives we've been told how easy it is to get pregnant.
0:14.2	So it's what do you mean I can't get pregnant, I thought it would be easy.

0:32.7	Today we're talking about the costs of infertility.
0:36.8	Now it's no surprise to anyone, I imagine, that having a child is expensive, not to mention
0:42.7	the costs of birthing a child, which we discussed in our blog post this week on MoneyWithKity.com.
0:48.4	We won't link that in the show notes for you, but when nearly 1 in 6 people globally is
0:53.6	affected by infertility, the expensive reality is that merely getting pregnant is not
0:59.0	always free either.
1:05.4	As of 2023, the majority of healthcare plans do not include fertility treatments in their
1:10.7	coverage, as they are not deemed, quote, medically necessary.
1:15.1	This means that people struggling with infertility have to pay for these types of services themselves.
1:21.1	And surprise, surprise, a baby don't come cheap.
1:24.8	And as we dug into the research for this episode, we realized there are a lot of thorny elements
1:30.1	to this topic around the ethics of things like surrogacy or destroying or donating unused
1:36.7	embryos, adoption, donor conceived children and more.
1:41.5	All that to say, this is not just a financial topic, but a complex human rights topic too.
1:47.5	And so we're going to highlight some of those concerns throughout the episode where appropriate.
