who's the author of a new book on The History of Corner Shops.

Drawing on her own experience, growing up above her parents' shop in Reading,

Babita's book reveals what Corner Shops can tell us about the experience of immigrants in post-war Britain.

Our editor, Rob Atar, met her in London to find out more.

The Corner Shop is clearly a British institution.

When did it first become associated with immigrant communities?

I think the first association began, probably around the late 1950s, early 1960s.

And it kind of set a trend really of the time of mass immigration into the UK.

And in particular, that was immigrants arriving from the West Indies, from the Southeast Asian continent, Asia, Indians, Pakistanis.
