So, in a talk about Khyperianism, I probably ought to begin with the brief biographical mention of

Abraham Kuiper.

Just as Calvin helped to nickname a theological position that existed long before Calvin was born,

so also Abraham Kuiper did the same thing. What we call

Kiperianism did not come into being with Abraham Kuiper, but in the rough and tumble of human history,

his name got attached to a position that existed long before Kuiper was born.

Calvin exalted the sovereignty of God in salvation in much the same way that Augustine

and the Apostle Paul had done before him.

And in the same way, Abraham Kuiper exalted the Lordship of Jesus Christ in every field

of human endeavor in much the same way that Calvin had done centuries before him.

So Calvin makes a distinction between the church and the kingdom, which we're going to get to in a few minutes.

But that's key to understanding how Jesus Christ is Lord of mathematics and Lord of bicycle repair shops

and Lord of cooks and bakers and so on. Abraham Kuiper lived as he taught. He was in turns a minister of the gospel, a theologian, an author, the founder

of a political party, the founder of a university, the founder of a newspaper, the founder

of a denomination, and the prime minister of the Netherlands. In short, he was a tornado in boots. He was an amazing man,
