Summary

On Trinity Sunday we contemplate the mystery of God as a play of persons. The Father gives rise to the Son while the Father and Son give rise to the Holy Spirit. God's unity is never compromised because the three are consubstantial, one in being. To begin to consider this mystery we must consider that love is what God is.

0:46.7

So how can we approach this great mystery and this great feast?

One of the most basic features of all reality, if you think about it, is the tendency to

1:15.1

communicate or to state it a bit differently to make images. So think of the simplest

1:23.7

thing, think of a rock or some other inanimate object. When the rains come and the ground

1:31.3

softens around it, the rock makes an image of itself in the earth. If you pick up a stone

1:38.6

and you hurl it through a window, it'll make an image of itself in the broken glass.

1:46.3

Now think of things at a higher level, think of plants. They can communicate themselves

1:52.9

make images of themselves even more dramatically. So plants can drop a seed which enters the

1:59.5

earth and eventually gives rise to a striking reproduction at much higher level than a rock

2:05.7

is able. Think of how trees eventually cover an entire countryside, how flowers cover an

2:13.5

entire hillside, image upon image upon image. Now, go a bit higher. Animals can reproduce

2:24.7

themselves even more intensely, more perfectly. Think of an embryo forming itself in the womb
