For months, Mary Gillespie had been receiving taunting letters from an unknown writer, the

contents of which all edged she'd been having an affair with her boss, the local school supervisor.

These letters had evolved over time, ultimately becoming a full-fledged harassment campaign

meant on terrorizing Mary, her family, and others in their small community of Circleville,

Ohio.

While no direct link could be established, these letters even led to the death of Mary's

husband, Ron, who'd allegedly left in pursuit of the writer, and ended up dead behind the

wheel of his own vehicle with a blood alcohol level of .16.

Now widowed, Mary had to bear the brunt of this hardship by herself.

Entering February of 1983, the harassment had gone on for several months, years even,

and police were no closer to figuring out the author's identity than they had been when

the first letters were received years earlier in 1977.

But on February 7, 1983, things took an unexpected turn.

This is part two of the Circleville letters.

There was a light snow that day, and Mary had supposedly been tearing down signs for weeks.

She had just completed her route for the high school students and was heading off to pick

up the elementary schoolers when she spotted a particularly vulgar sign about Tracy, her

daughter who was just 12 years old at the time, sleeping with school supervisor Gordon

Massey.

The sign was at the intersection of five points pike and Skiotto Derby Road near the city

of Mount Sterling.
