In March of 2020, Maida Mendes was living in Lincoln, Nebraska.

She was working as an administrator at a public school.

And then she got a call from her mom.

It was about their upcoming vacation.

She called in and asked me to call in and cancel the flights and see what their options were.

And I think that's when it kind of hit me that coronavirus was in Nebraska.

They had planned to visit family in Mexico, but they decided with the virus, it was a bad idea for her mom to travel.

Maida's mom had recently lost a kidney to cancer and was undergoing chemotherapy again this time for lung cancer.

It's been about a year and a half since she's been on the last, the latest treatment.
