Steve Huntley spent 30 distinguished years in Chicago journalism with the

0:05.3

Chicago Sun times. When I was with the other paper, back when journalism was

0:11.7

journalism, when the papers competed for news, when we were driven to compete,

0:17.4

and sometimes we'd knock down a scoop if the other side got it first. Back

0:24.5

when the Sun times in the Tribune covered something called news and tried

0:29.9

to keep opinion out of the news sections and tried to keep opinion out of the

0:35.7

feature sections and tried to keep opinion out of the garden sections and out

1:32.8

CWB Chicago does that important job now and well. Understanding all this while

1:39.8

language is critical, understanding how language has been twisted in a 2022

1:46.8

version of George Orwell's new speak is also critical. Can a free

1:53.7

republic survive the onslaught of new speak, which erases heretical thoughts, as

2:01.3

newspapers become silos of opinion, your silo, my silo, and we're separate and

2:11.4

we're not engaged in discussion in the public square because there is no

2:16.6

public square. We'll ask him today on this edition of the Chicago way podcast.
